abcSPROG would like to introduce a series of workshops that allows participants to deepen their knowledge of the English language, get to grips with grammar and vocabulary and practise using English in context. The workshops are designed to be ‘hands on’ and will include speaking, writing and a variety of grammar and vocabulary activities. You can join any or all workshops, as you prefer.

The workshops are designed for business professionals who conduct business in English, give presentations in English, write emails in English, or in other words, use English in their job.

The following workshops will be available in the spring of 2019:

1. Perfect Prose – the perfect email

Wednesday 27 February 14.00-16.15

In this workshop we will learn how to write the perfect formal and informal email. This workshop will cover the basic rules for writing a professional, well-structured email and examples of formal and informal language appropriate for business communication will be presented. Participants will write a series of short mails in order to practise the language and receive individual feedback on their mails and their language use.

By the end of the session, there should be no doubt in anyone’s mind about what a perfect email looks like or about how to write one.

2. Perfect Punctuation

Wednesday 20 March 14.00-16.15

In this workshop we will go through the basic rules of punctuation, including capitalisation and commas, etc. and how to use punctuation in typical email correspondence. Participants will check their knowledge with a series of activities which will allow them to practise using punctuation in sentences, paragraphs and longer texts such as emails and short reports.

By the end of the session, there should be no doubt in anyone’s mind where to put a comma, a capital letter or a full stop.

3. Working with words

Wednesday 24 April 14.00-16.15

In this workshop we will work with words that cause confusion and are often used incorrectly. We will also work with words and phrases that are often translated incorrectly with unfortunate consequences. Last but not least, we will get to grips with some of the most common ‘false friends’, the words which look like Danish words, but mean something completely different.

By the end of the session, participants will feel confident in their word choice and come out of the session equipped with a long list of useful words and phrases and another list of words and phrases it would be better not to use!

4. Would you like a cup of tea?

Wednesday 22 May 14.00-16.15

In this workshop we will learn the art of small talk, starting conversations, asking questions, giving opinions and keeping a conversation going. Through pair work activities, role play and group discussions, we will practise the art of conversing in English about everyday topics, using useful phrases to handle conversations in any setting: How to greet foreign visitors, how to offer a cup of tea, how to talk about Denmark, the weather, the business, etc. By the end of the session, everybody will be expert conversationalists and happily talk about the weather!

5. to ING or not to ING, that is the question!

Wednesday 16 January 14.00-16.15

In this workshop we will learn about ING forms; how to use them, when to use them and perhaps most importantly, when not to use them. This workshop will cover the basic grammar of the present continuous, past continuous, present simple and past simple forms, and participants will then practise using the language in emails and in pair and group conversations.

By the end of the session, there should be no doubt in anyone’s mind about when to ING or when not to ING.
